Immune boosting during winter. Winter is the worst time of the year for colds and flu and there are many ways that you can try to avoid illness and boost your immune system along the way!
1. SLEEP - it is a well know fact that getting 8 hours sleep can help your body to regenerate and repair itself. It is critical in keeping your mind and body healthy so try avoiding large meals before bedtime, and avoid caffeine and alcohol that are stimulants will keep you awake! Try going to bed at a regular time if you can as the body likes the consistency, and avoid using your phone, TV, computers, etc just before bed as these also stimulate the mind and keep it wide awake just when you want it to switch off.
2. WASH YOUR HANDS - it may seem obvious but make sure you regularly wash your hands, especially after using the bathroom and before and after each meal. This will help to avoid picking up any nasty germs. Use soap and warm water to scrub away the nasties.
3. HEALTHY FOOD - immune boosting foods include leafy greens, nuts & seeds, berries, citrus fruits, garlic and ginger, broccoli, red bell peppers, lean protein such as poultry or seafood, yogurt, fish oils and spices such as turmeric. Try to include some everyday in your diet, and give your body an immune-boosting treat.
4. EXERCISE - just 30 minutes a day will help to boost your immunity. It doesn't have to be a blasting cardio workout, a good walk or swim does wonders for your body (and also helps you to sleep).
5. VACCINES - if you get offered the flu jab and COVID-19 vaccine, then take the opportunity to protect your body during the coldest months of the year.
6. QUIT SMOKING - I know it is hard, but quitting smoking is the most beneficial thing you can do for your body. Smoking compromises the balance of your immune system and makes you much more susceptible to infections.
7. SUPPLEMENTS - supplement your diet throughout the winter with immune-boosting vitamins and supplements. Help to ward off disease and other health problems to strengthen your immunity.
